On January 31st, Hawthorne Public School welcomed 25 parents and guardians for a Literacy Session presented through the OCDSB’s Student Achievement Through Equity (SATE) Inquiry. The goal of the session was to equip parents of Grade 1 and 2 students with evidence-based tools and strategies that would help them in building their children’s reading, writing, and oral language skills.
The session was led by SATE Learning Coach Suhana Kadoura and supported by Community Education Liaison Noora Hussein, Hawthorne Principal Kristin Kopra, and teachers Caroline Owzarek and Trisha Pemberton. Following the interactive session, parents received take-away resources to help promote stronger literacy skills at home.
Parents and caregivers appreciated the opportunity to learn more about what their children are learning at school. Here’s some of the feedback they shared:

"This session was so helpful"
"We would like to have more of these sessions to support us"
"The resources provided were great"
