Measures of Student Achievement and Success

The school follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for student evaluation, available on the Board’s Website2. Student achievement is based on the expectations stated in the Provincial Curriculum documents for each subject area and grade.

At Hawthorne, we believe it is important to recognize student effort and achievement in the areas of academics, citizenship and extra-curricular activities. Success, however large or small, is recognized daily in our classrooms. Students are encouraged to model positive leadership, and are congratulated regularly. At the end of each year, over 20 awards and trophies are presented to students for a wide range of academic and personal successes.

As part of our evaluative process, teachers assess students on an on-going basis using a wide variety of strategies in their classrooms. As well students take part in standardized testing such as EQAO, Early Literacy Observation Toolkits (Kindergarten) and PM Benchmarks.

In addition, our students display their excellence in numerous areas outside of the regular classroom. In the past, Hawthorne intermediate students have won the regional Math Olympics, the French Public Speaking contest, the OCDSB Visual Arts Award and an Environmental Award. They also excelled in many athletic tournaments, including the gold medal in the Division Championships for Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball. Students competing in the Science Fair have gone on to present their projects at the Exposition in Toronto. Participants in our History Fair have excelled winning awards and trophies for their work. Furthermore, our students have shone in a variety of stage performances, including public speaking, dramatic/musical presentations, talent shows and assemblies.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

Along with an analysis of our EQAO results, we review teacher observations of student performance, report card marks, OCDSB tests, educational assessments and a variety of on-going classroom assessment tools as well the OCDSB Board Improvement goals as we dialogue about our School Improvement Plan for Student Success (SIPSA). Hawthorne’s 2015-2016 SIPSA focus was using Math Talk as a structured framework for developing student knowledge and understanidng of Math concepts. Math Talks allowed students to surface thinking and question their understanding while practicing the use of Math vocabulary. Staff participated in learning sessions that focused on the development of structured lessons and professional moderation. The outcome of the classroom strategy favourably demonstrated gains in student understanding and application of numeracy.
