Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

Hawthorne students excel in many areas both within the school and in the community showcasing this talent through athletic tournaments, leadership opportunities and student action council learning about positive ways to influence their community and the world. Students at Hawthorne organize projects that are specifically geared to helping others, such as the United Way, Red Cross, environmental concerns such as Ottawa’s Clean The Capital, Plan Canada, Holiday gift Baskets, food drives, and the Terry Fox Run. Hawthorne also sends intermediate students to the Provincial Leadership Camp in the summer. As positive members of the community, Hawthorne students organize and run bake sales, collection drives, and the Hawthorne Food Drive, with all monies donated to worthy community agencies, needy families and the Ottawa Food Bank.

Staff

Over the years, many teachers at Hawthorne have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to our Board and to the community, such as the OCDSB Mentoring Award, Associate Teacher Award (University of Ottawa), Kiwanis Award, the OCDSB Elementary Arts Award, the Ron Lynch Award and the Creative Leadership Award. The high academic standard that the staff set for their students is also modeled in their own lives and in their dedication to their students. Numerous Hawthorne staff have additional expertise in music, athletics, computers and the arts which they share with the students by setting up clubs and competitions. Our staff continually upgrade their teaching skills by professional reading, attending countless workshops, summer courses and curriculum in-services throughout the year.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Hawthorne has many active volunteers who give their time generously to enrich our school. Parent volunteers are an important support for classes on field trips to MacSkimming, National Arts Centre, Science and Technology Museum, Museum of Civilization, skating arenas, National Gallery and many more. Often parents or other members of the community will drop off donations of school supplies, winter clothing, food and books. The clothing and books are used for our annual Book Sale and Winter Clothing Sale which benefits our school community directly.

Community

Hawthorne has been a recognized part of the community and is supported by local businesses such as Starbucks, Giant Tiger, Gowlings, OC Transpo, Minto Development Corporation, LSI Corporation, Loblaws, Costco, Staples and Metro through donations to support our school. Throughout the year, guest speakers such as authors, performers, and other professionals encourage and inspire our students with their presentations. Our community links are strong and valued at Hawthorne.
